BUTUAN CITY – 3/28/19

DepEd Caraga Regional office conducted the 1st DepEd Gender and Development (GAD) Convention in Caraga on March 6-8, 2019 at Amontay Beach Resort, Nasipit, Agusan del Norte.

OIC-Regional Director Francis Cesar B. Bringas spearheaded the activity, together with the Gender Focal Person System led by Dr. Fidela Rosas, the OIC-Assistant Regional Director in partnership with the Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation – Integrated Development Center, Inc. (JPIC), a non-government organization (NGO) working with DepEd in the prevention of child sexual abuse and promotion of on-line safety for DepEd learners in the Divisions of  Siargao, Surigao City, and Surigao Norte.

The Regional Gender and Development Committee (RGADC) through the Regional Directors’ Council of the National Economic and Development Authority (RDC-NEDA) also pitched in support for the said activity. The convention was the realization of DepEd’s commitment to uphold RGADC’s celebration of the 2019 Women’s Month.  RGADC Chairperson and Commission on Human Rights XIII Regional Director Atty. Jerefe T. Bacang was the Keynote Speaker.

A total of 150 participants, 38 male and 112 female gender advocates from the 12 Schools Division Offices and the Regional Office, most of them GFPS members and program owners of their respective offices, attended the convention.

According to the over-all result of the on-line evaluation conducted by Dr. Jesus Nono, Education Program Supervisor of the Quality Assurance Division, the convention was outstanding. The speakers were outstanding as well.  They were from the Philippine Commission on Women (PCW) Certified National Resource Gender Pool namely: Ms. Marita C. Pimentel, Atty. Allen M. Gasulas, and Mr.  Paul Abarca.

DepEd Resource Speakers were Dr. Adrilene Mae J. Castaños and Ms. Fe M. Puspus.  Dr. Castaños, Project Development Officer IV of the Education Support Services Division of DepEd Caraga Region and Regional GAD Coordinator, presented the Gender Responsive Basic Education Policy (GRBE) as laid out in DepEd Order No. 32 s. 2017.  Ms. Puspus, an active GAD Coordinator of Butuan City Division, presented her research output as part of her Gender-based Research on Gender Mainstreaming in Butuan City.

Speakers from JPIC-IDC, Inc were: John Vincent M. Dumadangon, Joeruce O. Butcon, and Pastor Andrie Calaque. They conducted lectures and workshops on Child Sexual Abuse Prevention and Online Safety.

According the main resource speaker Ms. Marita Pimentel, the convention was very empowering as she expressed optimism that DepEd Caraga would be able to accomplish gender mainstreaming in all schools and offices in the region. She hoped that DepEd Caraga would organize a GAD Summit next year so that the best GAD practices of DepEd would shine in a public forum.
