“This is only the second GAD Convention in the region and the first in your regional office. You must be proud of this achievement,” Atty. Jerefe Bacang, CHR-Caraga Regional Director and Chair of Regional Gender and Development Council (RGADC), told the participants of the 1st DepEd Regional GAD Convention held at Amontay Beach Resort in Nasipit, Agusan del Norte on March 6, 2019. The attendees were gender advocates from DepEd’s 12 Schools Divisions in Caraga.

In her speech, Bacang detailed RGADC’s efforts toward championing gender equality through the “#DignityOfAll” campaign, which included a platform for recognizing trailblazing LGUs and agencies.

According to Bacang, DepEd Central Office is currently at Level II in terms of gender mainstreaming at the national level. This is because the office had already established strategic mechanisms (e.g., people, policies, and structures) in support of the GAD agenda or advocacies.

The 1st DepEd GAD Convention, Bacang added, was a testament to DepEd’s commitment to level up its gender mainstreaming efforts. She expected that the convention would instill into the hearts and minds of the participants the “#wemakechange” mindset, especially because the convention ended on a significant date, March 8, the exact same day as the International Women’s Day.
